More lawsuits continue to be filed against Johnson & Johnson by women who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
More families are coming forward in behalf of their loved ones due to the link between Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder and ovarian cancer. Families in both Washington and Oregon have recently filed lawsuits against the company claiming that they were never warned of the link between the powder and cancer.
The lawsuits have been filed in a Los Angeles Superior Court in behalf of four women, one of which passed away in 2015 from ovarian cancer.
Talc Linked to Ovarian Cancer
As early as the 1970’s, doctors and scientists claimed that using talcum powder in a woman’s intimate areas increased the risk of ovarian cancer. They believed that talc particles traveled through a women’s reproductive organs and into the ovaries. Researchers found these particles deeply embedded in ovarian tumors.
However, Johnson & Johnson continued to put talc in their baby powder, despite the evidence, and never provide a warning on their labeling. It is generally assumed that a product that was deemed safe for babies was also safe for adult women. When a person uses a product assuming it’s safe, only to discover it causes cancer, that is a very serious problem.
Lawsuits Against Johnson & Johnson
In 2016, St. Louis juries awarded $70.1 million, $72 million and $55 million in similar cases. While the company is appealing all three cases, there are nearly 2,000 comparable cases they are facing.
The result of using the product for all of these women has been devastating. They are seeking damages for medical expenses, loss of earnings, punitive damages, emotional distress and attorney fees.
